What Does a Cable Installer Do?

Typical duties and responsibilities

  • Install, maintain, and repair cable TV and internet systems
  • String and pull up cables between poles and underground as necessary to provide the strongest signal in the best position
  • Install cable racks, j-hooks, inner duct, and other related structures in support of cable systems
  • Inspect cable lines to ensure the system is working correctly

This technician will be responsible for

  • Fiber Optic structured cable distribution system installation
  • Ability to terminate all forms of fiber by various methods familiarity with fiber connector types and manufacturers, experience testing single-mode and multi-mode fiber installations, experience with OTDR testing and fiber optic troubleshooting, pulling cable, fire stopping, dressing cables and labeling to industry standards. Installing, terminating, and testing all forms of copper and fiber cabling
  • Installing closet hardware including backboards, connecting blocks, racks, patch panels, and fiber enclosures
  • Attending training and safety meetings, and working safely at all times

Requirements

  • Direct related experience (cabling, construction trades)
  • Proven experience as a fiber optic specialist BICSI Installer/Technician certification highly desired
  • Reliable daily travel to work-sites
  • Must be able to work safely following company policy/procedures on safety

  • Perform new connections, reconnects, upgrades, and disconnects for residential television, internet, and phone services
  • Troubleshoot all services up to WOW Cable standards and specifications
  • Installations could include relocating cable outlets, adding converters and modems, and interior and exterior wiring paths
  • Provide first-class customer service including detailed customer education on all products

Minimum qualifications:

  • HS Diploma or equivalent
  • Fiber experience is a plus, but not required
  • Must pass an extensive background check and pre-employment drug screen
  • Able to lift and carry up to 80 lbs. on a consistent basis
  • Flexible to work 5-6 days per week, including nights and holidays

Candidate Certifications to Look For

  • Certified Network Cable Installer (CNCI). The CNCI has become the preferred certification in the industry for network cable installation. The program offers both technical knowledge and practical activities for copper and fiber component installation. Certification proves a candidate’s knowledge and skill in network cable installation using current national and international industry standards and industry best practices. They’ll learn cabling media types, network topologies, LAN Hardware, PCs, switches, routers, how to interpret drawings, cable installation and termination, and networks, among other things. There are no prerequisites for the program.
  • BICSI Cabling Installation Certifications. Building Industry Consulting Service International offers several cabling installation certifications that validate a candidate’s installation knowledge and experience. The BICSI Installer 1 certificate requires no experience. The BICSI Installer 2, Copper, requires 1 year of experience. For the BICSI Installer 2, Optical Fiber, they’ll need two years of verifiable ICT installation experience. The BICSI Technician certificate requires 3 years of verifiable ICT installation experience. Candidates choose whichever certificate program is right for them, whether they are new to the industry or a 20-year veteran. 
  • Fiber Optics Installer (FOIC). The FOIC is accredited by the International Certification Accreditation Council and demonstrates a candidate’s understanding and expertise in optical fiber installation, connection, splicing, and testing. A Fiber Optic Installer designation means they are proficient at the installation of connectors on various types of fiber optic cables using multiple types of connectors, and can perform mechanical and fusion splicing. To maintain certification, candidates are required to keep up with current technology and recertify on an annual basis.
